Public Speaking Tutors
Interested in Tutoring for the Public Speaking Center?
The Highline College Public Speaking Center is looking for motivated students who would like to become a tutor!
The Public Speaking Center’s primary focus is to help students with their individual presentations (in and beyond communication studies classes), and with their group presentations across campus, as well as with career and academic interviews. The tutors work with students one-on-one or with groups to assist with speaking anxiety, outlining, research, source citations, visual aids, and delivery. The campus-wide Public Speaking Center supports students in Communication courses, non-Communication courses (i.e. English, Hospitality, Math) requiring any type of individual or group presentation.
Public Speaking Center tutors work with students one-on-one; conduct group tutoring sessions, if they were assisting a group of presenters; and they present, when asked, in classrooms and at campus events. They are required to attend training at the start of each quarter to be able to assist with issues related to speaking anxiety, outlining, research, source citations, visual aids, and delivery. Tutors are provided a training manual.
This position offers the students an opportunity to gain on-the-job experience and helps to build communication and leadership skills. These skills are highly sought-after by employers.
